I do not always feel the need to respond to everything that is trending in the news. Not even close. But after the brutal public murder of Charlie Kirk yesterday, our sermon text for Sunday feels even more relevant:
"In my vain life I have seen everything. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evildoing."
Ecclesiastes 7:15
God's people should be sorrowful, but not surprised by evil like this. And yes, we should call it evil. Now is not the time for silence or fear. Every God-fearing American, regardless of political affiliation, should condemn this violence without questions or caveats.
Let's pray for his widow Erika, and his two young children.
Let's pray his killer will be brought to justice.
Let's pray for healing in our nation.
Let's pray that we would be faithful to speak against evil, wherever it can be found.
And let's not allow the evils and injustices in our world to dim our hope in God or our trust in His Word. He has told us this is how things are "under the sun."
So let's long for heaven. Even so, come Lord Jesus.
