Our History
What Great Things God Has Done
  • In the mid-70’s Poquoson was among the fastest growing communities in the state of Virginia. The Peninsula Baptist Association’s leadership felt that it was the opportune time to begin a new mission in the Poquoson area.
  • Emmaus Baptist Church was given the opportunity to sponsor the mission, and after voting to do so, they sent three families to start the work. In March 1981 the sponsorship of the Mission changed to Bethel Baptist Church under the leadership of their pastor Franklin Hall.
  • The initial service of the Poquoson Baptist Chapel was held on April 20, 1980 in the Oddfellows Hall on Odd Road. Under the leadership of Rev. George Kissinger, Director of Missions on the Peninsula, the Mission began a slow but steady growth.
  • In August 1980 Rev. Kissinger left to form another mission and in November 1980 Dr. J. B. Flowers, retired pastor of Westhampton Baptist Church, came to serve, with a total of 35 members attending. During this time Grafton Baptist Church offered to donate their old church building if the Mission could find a suitable site. Shortly thereafter 5.3 acres of land was purchased on Wythe Creek Road to be used as a building site. After the site was cleared in the spring of 1981 the building was moved to its current location.
  • The first service in the new building was held on November 1, 1981 with a total membership of 50.
  • In 1982 the church began a preschool, Chapel Nursery School. This ministered to the community in a new way, allowing children ages 3-5 to attend three days a week and learn about Jesus.
  • In June 1983 Donald Frensley became the first full-time pastor of the chapel and in August 1984, the chapel was constituted as Poquoson Baptist Church.
  • The building program continued in the mid-80’s with the addition of a Sunday School Building.
  • This was followed by the completion of a new sanctuary with a seating capacity of over 250 people in March 1991. The parking facilities were increased to accommodate 100 cars, including designated parking for the handicapped and visitors. The church grounds included a covered shelter with picnic tables and playground equipment.
  • In January 1993 Pastor Frensley was called to a church in Tennessee and in July 1993 Pastor David Pouchot, who had been the interim pastor, was called to be the Pastor of Poquoson Baptist Church.
  • In January 1997 Ed Lilley joined the staff as the first full-time Minister of Youth after serving previously in a part-time capacity.
  • In August 1997 Pastor David Pouchot was led to begin a ministry in Maine and in October of 1997 the church called Pastor Donnie Frensley for a second time. Pastor Pouchot began a church planting ministry in the state of Maine, and continued that effort until his passing in 2015. Poquoson Baptist Church has supported this ministry for many years, and continues to do so.
  • In 1997 the parking lot was extended to accommodate more cars.
  • In March 2000 Ed Lilley was called to a church in Maryland. Also in March 2000 the church voted to change the Minister of Music position from part-time to full-time Minister of Music & Education.
  • In May 2000 Jerel Olson was called as full-time Minister of Students & Evangelism, a newly expanded position.
  • In August 2000 Larry Whitcomb was called as full-time Minister of Music & Education.
  • In the fall of 2002 the church completed a new building project which included a multi-purpose room / gym, a fellowship room, a full-size kitchen, classrooms, and storage space.
  • In November 2002 Donnie Frensley retired from the pastoral ministry.
  • Poquoson Baptist Church welcomed Pastor John Pouchot as full-time pastor in July of 2003.
  • In January 2004 the church voted to renovate the present sanctuary. A faith raising campaign for three months raised over $23,000. Renovations began after the Easter season.
  • In 2006, Jerel Olson was called to young adult ministry in Tennessee. In November of that same year, Justin Ham came to Poquoson Baptist Church as full-time Minister of Students & Evangelism.
  • Various Administrative Assistants have served over the years: Linny Wood, Mandy Stanley, Karen Smith, Marilyn Early, and Susan Thomas. In June 2013, Susan Thomas was hired for the Administrative role when Marilyn and her husband moved out of the area.
  • In March of 2014 Justin and Angie Ham were commissioned by the International Mission Board in Richmond, VA. In April 2014 they moved to France to begin training and moved to their post in Belgium in July of 2015.
  • In April of 2015, Jason Wells, a former student in the youth program, was called to Poquoson Baptist Church as the part-time Director of Student Ministries.
  • In December of 2015, John Pouchot resigned to take the pastorate at Petsworth Baptist Church in Gloucester Va.
